History

The Alabama National Guard Distinguished Service Ribbon honors Alabama National Guard personnel and certain civilians who carry out outstanding service in a role of notable significance.

Comprised of the Alabama Air National Guard and the Alabama Army National Guard, the Alabama National Guard is approximately 11,000 members strong as of 2006. It traces its origins back to militia activity during the War of 1812, and the Air component was officially added in 1917 with the inception of the 106th Aero Squadron.
