History - Established 1950

Established in 1950, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal honors Armed Forces Reserve personnel who honorably carry out 10 years of service. Although the service may be nonconsecutive, it must take place within a 12-year timeframe. Enlisted members as well as officers are eligible for the award.

Details

The medal features the image of a torch in front of a crossed bugle and horn, encircled by thirteen stars with rays between them extending outward. The reverse of the medal features a design and inscription indicating the corresponding branch of service. The ribbon for each branch is the same; it is yellow and is bisected by a thin vertical blue stripe, with three additional, thinner blue stripes appearing on each edge.

Subsequent awards may be indicated by the hourglass device. Additionally, the “M” device may be issued if the awardee served in qualifying terms of mobilized duty, as well as a corresponding numeral device. Only one “M” device is issued for multiple mobilizations under the same executive order.
