History

The Georgia State Defense Force Legion of Merit Ribbon honors Georgia State Defense Force members for superior service or accomplishments in carrying out duties beyond those normally expected. Qualifying service must be of unusual difficulty or significance or performed in such a manner as to warrant special recognition; in the event of an award for sustained superior service, the honoree must have carried out a minimum of 10 years in the requisite outstanding capacity.

Distinct from the Georgia National Guard but still under the aegis of the Georgia Department of Defense, the Georgia State Defense Force is a group of uncompensated volunteers who serve and assist the state in times of need. Headquartered in Marietta, the GSDF traces its roots back to General James Oglethorpe’s colonial militia in the eighteenth century, which contributed to Revolutionary War efforts against the British Crown.
