History - Established 1929

Authorized by the United States Congress on November 8, 1929, the Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal honors members of the U.S. Navy for service in Nicaragua. This service must have taken place in a naval operation carried out at any point from August 27, 1926 and January 2, 1933.

Details

Eligible awardees include those who served either embarked or ashore in Nicaragua or its waters.

The medal depicts the female figure of Columbia standing on a platform above waves; she is in a combative posture with her sword drawn. Behind her appear one male and one female figure whom she appears to be shielding. Text reading “SECOND NICARAGUAN CAMPAIGN” forms a crescent shape on the upper half of the medal, and the numerals “1926-1932” are inscribed on the bottom in a smaller font. The ribbon is red with set of paired thin gray stripes. The reverse depicts a left-facing eagle atop an anchor and grasping laurels; text reads “UNITED STATES NAVY” above and “FOR SERVICE” below.
