History

The Virginia National Guard Homeland Defense Ribbon honors Virginia National Guard members who have carried out satisfactory active duty on or subsequent to September 11, 2001, and under Title 32 of the U.S. code.

The Virginia National Guard is composed of the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Air National Guard. The Army component numbers around 7,500 members and is based in Sandston; it dates all the way back to 1607 militia activity in colonial Jamestown. The Air component, headquartered in Richmond, gained official recognition in June of 1947 with the 149th Fighter Squadron.
