History

The California National Guard Senior Enlisted Leadership Ribbon honors California National Guard Senior Enlisted members. Qualifying criteria are as follows:

-For First Sergeants, must have served a minimum of three years as such, completed requisite training, satisfy fitness requirements, remain fit for duty, and never step down for the duration (awarded with bronze diamond device for three years; silver for five years)
-For Command Sergeants Major and Chief Master Sergeants, must have served a minimum of three years as such, completed requisite training, satisfy fitness requirements, remain fit for duty, and never step down for the duration (awarded with bronze star device for three years at Wing or group level; silver for three years at state level; gold for three years at the state’s headquarters).

At nearly 23,000 members, the California National Guard is the largest in the country; it is made up of the California Army National Guard and California Air National Guard. The Army component dates back to the 1849 founding of a state militia, then called the First California Guard; the Air component, based in Sacramento, traces its roots back to August of 1917 when the 115th Aero Squadron was formed to support the United States’ efforts in World War I.

The ribbon is divided into three equal sections with yellow in the center flanked by dark blue on either side; it features yellow edging.
