History
The Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Ribbon honors individuals not primarily employed by the United States government who make outstanding contributions or carry out other noteworthy service on behalf of the Department of Defense, Joint Staff, or subsidiary bodies in the spirit of public improvement. It is the highest public service award bestowed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Details
The medal is gold and features the image of a shield superimposed over two parallel swords pointing upward and two criss-crossed. It is encircled by a laurel wreath, and an inscription on a scroll draped around the swords reads “JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF.” The reverse features a laurel wreath at the bottom and inscriptions reading “CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF” and “awarded to [NAME OF RECIPIENT] FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE.” The ribbon is white with a thick vertical purple stripe on each edge.
