The Virginia National Guard Legion of Merit honors Virginia National Guard members who carry out extraordinarily distinguished or meritorious service on behalf of Virginia.
The Virginia National Guard is composed of the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Air National Guard. The Army component numbers around 7,500 members and is based in Sandston; it dates all the way back to 1607 militia activity in colonial Jamestown. The Air component, headquartered in Richmond, gained official recognition in June of 1947 with the 149th Fighter Squadron.
The ribbon is dark blue and is bisected by a vertical red stripe flanked on either side by a thin white stripe.
