History - Established 1987

Established on July 1, 1987, the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon honors Coast Guard members who carry out designated feats of exceptional service in non-combat situations that are not eligible for other awards.

Qualifying Coast Guard operations are listed below:
-assistance to friendly nations and/or developing countries
- proceedings that entail collaboration or other interaction with foreign governments to the end of saving lives or property in a maritime context
-special proceedings related to events of substantial public and media interest
-special cross-agency proceedings related to law enforcement and/or national security

Details

The ribbon is bisected by a thin vertical red stripe and is flanked on either side by a thin white stripe, thick light blue stripe, thin green and yellow stripes, and thick blue stripe proceeding outward.

Subsequent awards may be indicated by service stars.
