History

The Oregon National Guard Superior Soldier Ribbon honors Oregon National Guard members who have won awards including Outstanding Airman of the year, Oregon Sergeant of the Year, or the Major General Chester E. McCarty award.

The award may also be presented for the execution of the following achievements during a training year:

-An impeccable attendance record
-Assigned weapon qualification
-Minimum qualifying score of 60 on the physical fitness test and meeting weight standards
-Qualification in MOS
-High school diploma or equivalent
-Fulfillment of education requirements in line with rank
-No disciplinary actions for the corresponding period

The Oregon National Guard is composed of the Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Air National Guard. The Army component traces its roots back to 1843 and maintains 41 armories across 33 communities in the state. The Air component was founded in 1940 with the 123d Observation Squadron. It is currently based in Salem and is made up of the 142d Fighter Wing and 173rd Fighter Wing.
