History

The Connecticut National Guard Medal of Valor honors Connecticut National Guard members who demonstrate heroic acts or feats of bravery exceeding expectations and typically involving the risk of life.

Composed of the Connecticut Army National Guard and the Connecticut Air National Guard, the Connecticut National Guard dates all the way back to militia activity in 1672. The Air component originally formed in 1917 in support of World War I efforts but was not established in its present form until 1946; its current numbers are estimated at 1,200. The Connecticut Army National Guard is recognized as the country’s oldest branch of the military.
