History - Established 1992

Established on December 7, 1992 and discontinued on March 1, 2002, the Transportation Distinguished Service Medal honors Coast Guard members who carry out exceptional service in a position or task of considerable responsibility while operating under the aegis of the Department of Transportation. It has since been replaced by a medal under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security.

Details

The medal features a blue triskelion shape on a black disk and appearing over two crossed anchors; the medal is encircled by a green wreath of laurels. The reverse of the medal reads “UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION” and “AWARDED TO [NAME OF RECIPIENT] FOR EXTRAORDINARY MERITORIOUS SERVICE.” The ribbon is dark blue with a thin vertical red stripe toward each edge as well as white edging.

Subsequent ribbons may be indicated by gold or silver stars.
