History - Established 1926

Established on July 2, 1926, the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal honors United States Armed Forces members who carry out acts of heroism or otherwise exceptional achievement in combat situations involving aerial flight on or after November 11, 1918.

Details

The medal is bronze and in the shape of a cross upon a ridged square shape. The ribbon is blue and is bisected by a thin red vertical stripe flanked by thinner white stripes; another thin white stripe appears toward each edge.

Subsequent awards may be indicated by oak leaf clusters or stars as appropriate, and the “V” device may be issued in instances of heroism.
