Established on August 3, 1983, the Joint Service Achievement Medal honors United States Armed Forces personnel who rank below O-6 and perform noteworthy service on behalf of designated organizations including the Defense Agencies, the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Headquarters of Unified Commands, or the Office of the Secretary of Defense; it may not be awarded for an act receiving another Achievement Medal and is typically granted for service of a lesser degree than would warrant the Joint Service Commendation Medal.
The medal is bronze and in the shape of a one six-pointed star atop another; it features a bald eagle grasping three arrows. The ribbon is bisected by a thin vertical red stripe flanked on either side by a thick blue stripe, followed by a thinner green stripe flanked in turn by thin white stripes as well as blue edging.
Subsequent awards may be indicated by oak leaf clusters.
