History

The Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award honors civilian Navy employees who demonstrate exceptional service in excess of peers and expectations. It is the most prestigious honorary Navy award for which civilians are eligible. The following considerations apply:

-Exceptional service must be sustained and typically will have been recognized by other honorary awards
-Evidence of extraordinary leadership abilities
-Accomplishments that have positively and broadly affected the Department of the Navy
-Improvements to protocol or technological advances
-Heroic acts
-Increased efficiency or economy in protocols
-Noteworthy collaborative efforts with other agencies

Details

The medal features the Navy crest encircled by dark blue enamel and an inscription reading “DISTINGUISHED SERVICE - DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY.” The ribbon is dark blue with three thin vertical gold stripes toward the center.
