History - Established 1951

Established in 1951, the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award honors civilians who have carried out acts of valor or heroism or who have demonstrated extraordinary service on behalf of the Navy over a lengthy interval. It is the most prestigious award for which non-employees of the Navy are eligible.

Details

The medal features the Navy crest encircled by an inscription reading “DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The reverse features inscriptions reading “AWARDED TO [NAME OF RECIPIENT]” and “DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE.” The ribbon is divided into equal sections of dark blue on the right and golden yellow on the left.
