Established on December 19, 1944, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon honors Navy and Marine Corps units that set themselves apart through feats of valor in combat or through exceptional service in non-combat circumstances. The award may be presented to foreign units or members of other American branches serving with the United States Navy or Marine Corps and is effective dating back to December 7, 1941. The award requires service comparable to that which would warrant a Silver Star or Legion of Merit if performed individually.
The ribbon is green with one vertical stripe each of red, yellow, and blue proceeding outward on each edge.
Subsequent awards may be indicated by bronze service stars.
