Republic of Vietnam Wound Medal

History - Established 1950

Established on January 3, 1953, the Republic of Vietnam Wound Medal honors South Vietnamese and, rarely, United States military members who were wounded or killed in combat in the Vietnam War. As it is roughly equivalent to the Purple Heart, it is not allowed to be worn on United States uniforms.

Details

The medal is in the shape of a six-pointed, ball-tipped red star backed by a wreath. The ribbon is bisected by a thin vertical red stripe and flanked on either side by a thick yellow stripe followed by thin stripes of white, green, white, green, and white proceeding outward to each edge.
