History

The Texas National Guard Cavalry Service Ribbon honors Texas National Guard members who carry out no fewer than 30 days of service overseas supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom and related operations with the 124th Cavalry. It is a one-time award, and qualifying service must have occurred on or after September 11, 2001.

The Texas National Guard is composed of the Texas Army National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. The Army component dates back to a militia established by Sam Houston in 1835; it currently numbers approximately 19,000 and operates 117 armories. The Air component, headquartered in Austin, traces back to the 111th Aero Squadron formed in 1917 in support of World War I efforts.
