The Washington National Guard Meritorious Service Medal honors Washington National Guard members who distinguish themselves through exemplary service.
The Washington National Guard is made up of the Washington Army National Guard and the Washington Air National Guard. The Army component numbers approximately 6,200 and is based in Camp Murray; it traces its roots back to territorial militia activity in 1853. The Air component, at around 2,100 members, is based in Tacoma and originated in 1917 with the formation of the 116th Aero Squadron, which supported World War I efforts.
The ribbon is red with a thin vertical white stripe toward each edge as well as white edging.
