The WWII Merchant Marine Commemorative Medal is intended to honor members of the United States Merchant Marine who carried out service on behalf of their country during World War II.
The Merchant Marine consists of civilian mariners who operate privately and federally owned vessels; in wartime, these vessels may be called to provide transportation or other support for military troops or supplies.
The medal features the seal of the United States Merchant Marine, encircled by an inscription that reads “AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE WWII VETERANS.” The ribbon is bisected by a set of thin blue, white, and red stripes flanked on either by a thicker stripe of white, blue, and light blue proceeding outward.
