History

The Michigan National Guard Distinguished Service Medal honors Michigan National Guard members who who execute acts of heroism or otherwise noteworthy service, typically involving positions or duties of significant responsibility.

The Michigan National Guard is composed of the Michigan Army National Guard and the Michigan Air National Guard. The Army component is based in Lansing and traces its origins back to militia group in 1803; it currently maintains 60 armories. The Air component, also based in Lansing, originated in 1917 with the 107th Aero Squadron and currently consists of the 110th Attack Wing and the 127th Wing.
