History

The Michigan National Guard Lifesaving Medal honors Michigan National Guard members who execute an act of heroism in attempting to save another individual’s life in a manner that sets them apart from their peers.

The Michigan National Guard is composed of the Michigan Army National Guard and the Michigan Air National Guard. The Army component is based in Lansing and traces its origins back to militia group in 1803; it currently maintains 60 armories. The Air component, also based in Lansing, originated in 1917 with the 107th Aero Squadron and currently consists of the 110th Attack Wing and the 127th Wing.
