History

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the Department of Transportation established a series of awards to honor civilians and military personnel who assisted in subsequent relief efforts. The 9-11 Coast Guard Ribbon was discontinued in 2002 but is still authorized for uniform wear.

Those qualifying for 9-11 Ribbon, primarily awarded to Coast Guard members, include the following:
-Personnel who helped to transition Operational Control to Operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle, or Protecting Liberty between September 11, 2001 and September 11, 2002
-Personnel who carried out service entailing patrols at harbors and designated infrastructure facilities, high-interest vessel escort, or boarding seacraft entering United States waters between September 11, 2001 and September 11, 2002.
-Personnel who manned command centers on behalf of the Coast guard, the Department of Defense, the Department of Transportation, or the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a minimum term of 14 days between September 11, 2001 and September 11, 2002

Details

The ribbon features three vertical white stripes alternating with stripes of red and blue, two each.
