History - Established 1942

Established on November 6, 1942, the European – African – Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (EAME) honors military personnel who carried out service in the European Theater during World War II. Initially awarded as a ribbon, the medal was authorized in July of 1947.

To qualify, service must has taken place between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946; specific dates, regions, and operations are listed below:

-Air Combat between December 7, 1941 and September 2, 1945
-Egypt/Libya between June 11, 1942 and February 12, 1943
-Europe Air Offensive between July 4, 1942 and June 5, 1944
-Air operations, Algeria/French Morocco between November 8 and 11, 1942
-Air operations, Tunisia between November 12, 1942 and May 13, 1943
-Air operations, Sicily between May 14, 1943 and August 17, 1943
-Air operations, Naples-Foggia between August 18, 1943 and January 21, 1944
-Anzio between January 22 and May 9, 1944
-Rome/Arno between January 22 and September 9, 1944
-Normandy between June 6 and July 24, 1944
-Northern France between July 25 and September 14, 1944
-Southern France between August 15 and September 14, 1944
-Northern Apennines between September 10, 1944 and April 4, 1945
-Rhineland between September 15, 1944 and March 21, 1945
-Ardennes/Alsace between December 16, 1944 and January 25, 1945
-Central Europe between March 22 and May 11, 1945

Details

The medal is bronze and features the image of Allied forces landing on shore below an inscription that reads “EUROPEAN AFRICAN MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN,” and the reverse features a bald eagle, the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the years “1941-1945.” The ribbon is green and is bisected by a thin band of blue, white and red; to the right proceeding outward are a thick vertical green stripe, a thin band of red, white, and green, and brown edging; to the left proceeding outward are a thick vertical green stripe, a thin band of white, black, and white, and brown edging.
