History

The Oklahoma National Guard Distinguished Service Medal honors Oklahoma National Guard members who carry out exceptional service that has resulted in notable contributions or improvements to the Oklahoma National Guard, or which enhances its repute.

The Oklahoma National Guard is composed of the Oklahoma Army National Guard and the Oklahoma Air National Guard. The Army component, which dates back to the formation of the Oklahoma Territorial Militia in 1890, numbers approximately 7,400 and is headquartered in Oklahoma City. The Air component,also based in Oklahoma City, numbers approximately 2,500 and traces its roots back to the formation of the 125th Observation Squadron in 1940.

Details

The medal features the image of cross with a five-pointed star in the center encircled by a laurel wreath, encircled by an inscription reading “FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE - OKLAHOMA NATIONAL GUARD.” The ribbon is yellow and features a thin vertical red stripe followed by a slightly thicker stripe each of white and dark blue on each edge.
