The Texas National Guard Desert Shield/Desert Storm Campaign Medal honors Texas National Guard members who carried out service supporting Operation Desert Shield or Desert Storm on or subsequent to August 1, 1990.
The Texas National Guard is composed of the Texas Army National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. The Army component dates back to a militia established by Sam Houston in 1835; it currently numbers approximately 19,000 and operates 117 armories. The Air component, headquartered in Austin, traces back to the 111th Aero Squadron formed in 1917 in support of World War I efforts.
The ribbon is tan and is bisected by a thin vertical black stripe; it features a thin band of red, white, and blue on each edge proceeding outward.
