The Vermont National Guard Commendation Medal honors Vermont National Guard members who carry out meritorious service of a degree greater than that required for the Vermont National Guard Achievement Medal but of a lesser degree than would warrant the Vermont National Guard Distinguished Service Medal.
The Vermont National Guard is made up of the Vermont Army National Guard and the Vermont Air National Guard, also referred to as the Green Mountain Boys. The Army component numbers approximately 3,000 soldiers and dates back to militia activity in the mid-eighteenth century. The Air component, based in South Burlington and numbering around 1,000 airmen and women, traces its roots to the 67th Fighter Wing, formed officially in October of 1946.
The ribbon features a broad vertical yellow stripe in the center flanked on either side by slightly thinner green stripe.
