The Vermont National Guard Meritorious Service Ribbon honors Vermont National Guard members who carry out a heroic act or other noteworthy accomplishments in a sustained and significant capacity on behalf of the state or the Guard.
The Vermont National Guard is made up of the Vermont Army National Guard and the Vermont Air National Guard, also referred to as the Green Mountain Boys. The Army component numbers approximately 3,000 soldiers and dates back to militia activity in the mid-eighteenth century. The Air component, based in South Burlington and numbering around 1,000 airmen and women, traces its roots to the 67th Fighter Wing, formed officially in October of 1946.
The ribbon is bisected by a thin vertical white stripe flanked on the right by a thick blue stripe and on the left by a thick green stripe; it also features white edging.
