History

The Wyoming National Guard Outstanding Service Ribbon honors Wyoming National Guard members who carry out exceptional service in a manner that sets themselves apart from their peers but of a lesser nature than would warrant the Meritorious Achievement Medal.

The Wyoming National Guard consists of the Wyoming Army National Guard and the Wyoming Air National Guard. The Army component dates back to a territorial militia in 1870 and numbers approximately 1,700 soldiers at present. The Air component was founded in August of 1946 and currently numbers approximately 1,200; its major unit is the 153d Airlift Wing, and it is based in Cheyenne.
