History - Established 1944

The Merchant Marine Atlantic War Zone Medal honors Merchant Marine mariners who carried out service onboard merchant vessels running American colors December 7, 1941 and November 8, 1945. Eligible parts of the Atlantic War Zone include the Barents, Caribbean, and Greenland Seas, the Gulf of Mexico, and the North and South Atlantic Ocean,

The Merchant Marine consists of civilian mariners who operate privately and federally owned vessels; in wartime, these vessels may be called to provide transportation or other support for military troops or supplies.

Details

The medal is bronze and features the image of an eagle’s head within a triangle superimposed over the rays of a compass rose; below the triangle, an inscription reads “ATLANTIC WAR ZONE.” The ribbon is red with two thin vertical white stripes elaborated with a red pattern toward the center; it features a dark red stripe on each edge.
