Established on May 20, 1968, the Merchant Marine Vietnam Service Medal honors Merchant Marine mariners who carried out service onboard merchant ships running American colors in Vietnamese waters between the dates of July 4, 1965 and August 15, 1973. The award was originally issued as a ribbon only, with the medal added in 1992.
The Merchant Marine consists of civilian mariners who operate privately and federally owned vessels; in wartime, these vessels may be called to provide transportation or other support for military troops or supplies.
The medal features an Asian dragon superimposed over an anchor and a shoreline; an inscription reads “VIETNAM SERVICE.” The ribbon is golden yellow with three thin vertical red stripes toward the center and dark blue edging.
