History

The Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal honors Merchant Marine mariners who carried out service onboard merchant vessels running American colors while supporting Operation Desert Shield or Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf between the dates of August 2, 1990 and December 31, 1991.

The Merchant Marine consists of civilian mariners who operate privately and federally owned vessels; in wartime, these vessels may be called to provide transportation or other support for military troops or supplies

Details

The medal is bronze and features the image of an anchor flanked on either side by a seahorse. The ribbon is bisected by a thin vertical dark blue stripe flanked on either side by a thinner dark red stripe and white stripe, a thicker green stripe bordered by aqua, and white edging.
