The New Mexico National Guard Distinguished Service Medal honors New Mexico National Guard members who demonstrate excellence in carrying out duties of particular responsibility or significance on behalf of New Mexico and in such a manner as to set themselves apart from their peers.
The New Mexico National Guard is composed of the New Mexico Army National Guard and the New Mexico Air National Guard. The Army component originated as a territorial militia in 1846 and is headquartered in Santa Fe. The Air component, established in 1947 when the Air Force became a distinct branch of the United States military, is based in Albuquerque and consists of the 150th Fighter Wing.
The ribbon is white and features a thin vertical red stripe on each edge.
