History

The Vermont National Guard Desert Storm Ribbon honors Vermont National Guard members who carried out service abroad in Operation Desert Storm between the dates of August 1, 1990 and August 31, 1991.

The Vermont National Guard is made up of the Vermont Army National Guard and the Vermont Air National Guard, also referred to as the Green Mountain Boys. The Army component numbers approximately 3,000 soldiers and dates back to militia activity in the mid-eighteenth century. The Air component, based in South Burlington and numbering around 1,000 airmen and women, traces its roots to the 67th Fighter Wing, formed officially in October of 1946.
